NEW YORK - PENNSYLVANIA JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE HISTORY
1973 - 1979
The NY-Penn Junior Hockey League was formed in 1973 with the Rochester Monarchs, Buffalo Blades, Syracuse Jr. Blazers and Erie Lions being the charter members. The league lost Erie after just one season but added the Amherst Knights, West Seneca Cougars, Clinton Flyers and Niagara Falls Mang Sharks to grow to a seven team league.
In its third season Clinton dropped out and the Syracuse franchise was renamed the Stars. The league grew back to seven teams in it's fourth season adding the Binghamton Barons.
During the 1976-77 season, Buffalo folded. At seasons end, Amherst dropped out.
Buffalo wasn't long without a team as the Cougars relocated to Buffalo to become the Junior Sabres. In 1978, the Pittsburgh Jr Penguins joined the league.
This proved to be the league's last season. A few of the teams continued on as part of the the short lived National Junior Hockey League.
