RENFREW, ONTARIO

Renfrew is one of those small towns that played a very big role in the early days of organized hockey. In 1908, the Renfrew Millionaires (more properly called the Creamary Kings) were one of four teams that made up the Federal Hockey League. The following year, there was a major upheaval in the professional hockey ranks as the ECHA was reformed into the CHA, leaving out the Montreal Wanderers in the process. The Wanderers decided to form their own league and drew in two teams from the Temiskaming Pro League (Cobalt and Haileybury) along with the Renfrew Millionaires. The move ended the Federal League.

Not only did they draw in strong competition from other leagues, they decided they needed a French Canadian team from Montreal to round out the league. So, the Montreal Canadiens were formed. Renfrew played in this league for two seasons before disappearing and the league went on to become the NHL.
