PETROLIA SQUIRES

(1973 - Present)

In 1973, the Petrolia Chiefs were renamed the Petrolia Squires in the new Western Intermediate 'C' Hockey League. At that time, few would have guessed that the Squires would end up the only team to survive to present day without interruption. The Squires played in the Western Intermediate 'C' League until it merged with the Seaway League to become the Seaway-Western Intermediate 'C' Hockey Leauge in 1976. After single season in this league, the Squires moved up to join the Continental Senior 'A' Hockey League. By 1980, the league assumed the name OHA Senior 'A'. The Squires hung on until the leagues demise in 1986. The Squires then moved on to Seaway-Cyclone Senior 'B' League (Essentially the same league they had left 10 years earlier). The league eventually merged with the Senior 'A' league in 1990. This league evolved into the current OHA Southwestern Senior 'A' league. With the demise of the Alymer Hornets in 2001, the Squires are now the oldest team in the league.
