CORNWALL ROYALS
(1963 - 1992)
The Cornwall Royals started out in 1963 joining the old Ottawa-Hull & District Junior 'A' Hockey League. The following season, the league became known as the Central Junior Hockey League. After the loss of Ottawa to the OHA, the league's stature dropped. In 1968, the Royals left the league to join the Montreal Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League. The following year, the league merged with a Provincial league to form the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Cornwall was a charter member. The Royals were very successful in the QMJHL winning back to back Memorial Cups. Being an Ontario based team, they participated in the same drafts as OHA teams. In 1981, the Royals were pressured to leave the QMJHL and join the new OHL. The Royals did not have the same level of success in the OHL. In 1992, the team relocated to Newmarket.
The Cornwall Royals have the distinction of being the only team to have played in three different top level junior leagues.
