ABITIBI, ONTARIO

Teams have played under the Abitibi name, however there is no town called Abitibi. It represents an area around Iroquois Falls in Northern Ontario, just East of Timmins. The Abitibi Eskimos had been a successful Senior team and last played in the 1960's. Recently, the Iroquois Falls Eskis of the NOJHL reclaimed the old mantle and became the Abitibi Eskimos.

The name is derived from the Town's major employer Abitibi Paper Company (now Abitibi Consolidated Inc.) a major worldwide newsprint producer. In their Senior A days the Eskimos, like most Company Town teams, were essentially semi-pro with many of the players on the Company payroll.
