NELSON MAPLE LEAFS

(1934 - 1987)

The Nelson Maple Leafs are one of the great names in Canadian Senior hockey. The club was formed in 1934 when the Nelson Red Wings changed their name to the Maple Leafs in the West Kootenay Senior Hockey League. the club suspended operations in 1941 forcing Trail and Kimberley to find competition in Alberta. The club resumed play in the new Western International Hockey League in 1945. The club dropped out of the league in 1962 forcing Trail and Kimberley to continue on as independent teams. They returned in 1963 reforming the WIHL. The club finally died for good in 1987 and the WIHL followed one year later.
